Geelong Baseball Centre Upgrade Sets the Stage for International Talent
Built in 2002, our Turfcare team has maintained the fields at the Geelong Baseball Centre for the City of Greater Geelong since several years. The centre has a long reputation for hosting world-class events. Notably, the Geelong-Korea team, former members of the Australian Baseball League, competed at the site for three seasons beginning in 2018. And now, with support from the City of Greater Geelong, our team has just completed the redevelopment of Diamond 1.
In an impressive 50-day turnaround, the team rebuilt the field with works including:
- Removal of the old surface, including turf removal, 100mm topsoil and old skinned material removal;
- Reshaping of the base;
- Installation of a new irrigation system, drains and pits;
- A new pitching mound, bases, skins, 100mm rootzone, warning track and 40ft foul poles;
- And the installation of over 9,000m² of turf.
The upgraded field was officially opened in January, with Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj in attendance, along with the General Manager of KT Wiz, the President of Geelong Baycats and the Melbourne Aces General Manager.
“We’ve improved the infield and outfield surfaces, which will provide more consistent bounce and footing, reduce the risk of injuries and allow baseballers playing here to perform at their best,” said Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj.
“These improvements mean fewer disruptions, less maintenance and a consistently high-quality playing environment.”
KT Wiz, 2021 Korean Series champions, have trained at Geelong Baseball Centre since January, using the facility as their spring base ahead of their upcoming season.
In exciting news, the Melbourne Aces will play KT Wiz in the Diamond Duel on Monday, 16 February at Geelong Baseball Centre, the first time this global series will be played here.
